Seeing as even Microsoft’s chatbot has started giving some disturbing responses, maybe it’s time to step into the shoes of Major Sergei Nechaev, nicknamed P-3, and take on the FPS adventure Atomic Heart, the new game by Mundfish.
WHAT IS ATOMIC HEART?
Set in a dystopian alternate past, Atomic Heart takes place in the period following the Second World War, in a technologically advanced Soviet Union where people and robots live together peacefully, and on the eve of the launch of a very powerful neural network which will bring them together in a single “hive mind” … What could possibly go wrong?!
You will be able to discover exactly what does go awry by experiencing the adventure of Atomic Heart in Italian as well, thanks to our localization carried out in partnership with Riotloc, which handled the localization project into all languages.
THE LOCALIZATION OF ATOMIC HEART: WORKFLOW AND RESOURCES
The localization process for Atomic Heart was managed optimally for our translation team. Indeed Riotloc, in its role of the translation agency managing the project, provided us with:
- Description and images of the setting and locations: the player finds themselves in a dystopian Soviet Union, and knowing the type of atmosphere which reigns in the game is key to ensuring the right language is employed, for example by making use of some specific terms used in the Soviet Union.
- Descriptions of the characters and their motivations: knowing the gender, the personality, the history and the motivations of a character in advance can significantly facilitate the work of the translator, who does not need to gradually extrapolate this information as they work their way through the text. This meant that we knew right away that P-3 is a loyal soldier, while Baba Zina has a direct character and doesn’t mince her words.
- Glossary: essential for maintaining consistency in the game and revealing the presence of recurring expressions before starting the localization process. The expression “crispy critters” is of central importance in the game, and dealing with it in advance was key to the success of the localization.
- Videos and cutscenes: hearing the characters talking and moving around the environment is a great help in ensuring a correct localization result!
- PEGI 18: Atomic Heart is rated as an adult game, and in the localization process we took this into account, making use of crude, violent and at times explicit language suited to the different situations and/or characters.
With all these elements, and keeping up constant communication with Riotloc and the other work teams, we localized and reviewed the game using our faithful CAT Tool, MemoQ.
ATOMIC HEART AUDIO REVIEW
To ensure that everything was perfect, we also reviewed all the dubbed audio, carried out outstandigly by Jinglebell Localization, and it was fantastic to hear the dialogue come to life thanks to the voice actors, as well as seeing how some of the dialogue was made even more fluid and natural in the dubbing studio.
ENJOY!
We hope you like Atomic Heart – if you want to watch the trailer, it is available here:
